Bread, Cheese, and Fruit: The Sandwich Deconstructed

Crusty bread and yummy cheese does not need to be reserved for entertaining.  Incorporating some fruit into a meal makes it less of an afterthought, less of a “have to”.  Cheese and fruit together can bring out complexities in each that may not normally be noticed.  And bread is something that most kids will accept without complaint.

For those who think they don’t like fruit, slicing is one small way to make it seem more appetizing and more do-able.  If slicing apples or pears the night before, brush with some lemon juice to avoid browning.

Some of my favorite combinations:

Havarti and Pear:

Havarti is a great cheese to start branching out with, if your child has tasted nothing but American.  It’s creamy and mild.

Cheddar and Apple:

An old time classic.  Adding these to tuna fish is another awesome flavor boost!

Feta and Grapes:

You can buy a block of feta, which I recommend.  Or already crumbled.  Grapes are an easy, ready to go fruit that most kids will eat without much difficult.  Make sure to quarter the grapes for children 4 and under to avoid choking.
